Every year, we set goals that we are confident we will achieve. This time, we are sure we won’t miss the mark, right?
But inevitably, the same thing happens: we make plans with the best of intentions, but they often fall apart. It’s a never-ending cycle. We set ourselves up for failure, feel guilty, try again, and make the same mistakes.
Whenever we don’t reach our goals—and it’s important to set goals a bit out of reach to motivate us—we should learn from the experience. For instance, if you drink 15 sodas a week, going cold turkey might set you up for failure. Instead, try reducing your intake by half first, and when you manage that, reduce it further. The main issue is that many of us don’t set measurable goals.
We often create vague goals like “I want to be happy this year.” But how do you measure happiness? And who will ensure you stay on track?
That’s why you need to set measurable goals and have someone hold you accountable. These two elements work together. Without measurable goals, no one can gauge your progress. Without accountability, it’s easy to fudge the numbers or give up when you stumble. And you will stumble, and that’s okay.
Failure is beneficial. No one should achieve every goal they set. If I did, I’d already own a condo in the Keys with a fantastic fishing boat. Realistically, if I accomplish 50-60% of my goals, I consider that a success because I set ambitious, long-term objectives that require several smaller goals to achieve. If you’re hitting all your goals, perhaps it’s time to aim higher.
So, what are your goals for this year? Let’s take “getting in shape” as an example. Make it measurable by setting specific subgoals:
Combining these smaller goals will help you get in shape and provide clear benchmarks to keep you focused.
To find someone to hold you accountable, you could team up with a workout partner, ask a coworker, rely on a family member, or your significant other. Or you can count on us!
