Relaxing Together During COVID-19 Social Isolation: A Guide for Couples

Dealing with social isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic is a new experience for all of us. Suddenly, we have more free time, but can’t engage in our usual hobbies or routines. Even simple activities like dining out are off the table. If you’re stuck at home with a partner, this can lead to increased stress.

So, how can we relax during this period of social isolation, and how can we help our partners do the same?

A few months ago, many of us looked forward to finishing work so we could go home and relax. Now, being stuck at home to curb the spread of COVID-19 has us longing for the day we can safely leave again. Besides the boredom, there are real worries to contend with—like unemployment or changes in our jobs, figuring out how to apply for assistance, and managing on a tighter budget. We may also have loved ones battling the disease, adding to our stress.

Everyone’s way of dealing with stress is different, but it generally helps to focus on self-care, control what we can, and let go of what we can’t. Here are some tips:

– Treat yourself to something you love, like a favorite meal or a home spa day.
– Take a break from chores and give yourself a day to unwind.
– Try to stick to a routine, redecorate a room, or concentrate on an enjoyable project.

Remember, we can’t stop the virus on our own, so it’s best not to stress about things beyond our control. Do what you can and then shift your focus elsewhere.

The same strategies apply to supporting your partner. Help them relax by doing things that ease their mind. If stress leads to tension and a partner starts acting out, consider their wellbeing and what might help. Give them a break by taking on household chores, or let them have some alone time without taking it personally.

If you need time alone, calmly explain it’s a way for you to destress. Ensuring mutual support and creating a peaceful environment are key. Once alone time is over, focus on supporting each other. By doing this, we can navigate social isolation more comfortably together.
