Working out or exercising doesn’t always have to be at your local gym or even at home! Some of the most fun and rewarding experiences happen when you join friends and do something outdoors.
For example, this past weekend, we participated in The Color Vibe 5K. Trust me, I’m not a runner. I pretty much hate running and rarely do it. I know it’s good for cardiovascular conditioning, but I prefer circuit classes. Nonetheless, I ran it anyway!
It turned out to be a great time and an effective workout. My calves are still sore (yes, I’m a big baby). Many people have goals of running a 5K, 10K, half marathon, or even a full marathon but have no clue where to start.
I’m not the biggest runner out there, yet even I managed to complete a 5K. Anyone can do it and enjoy it! The best way to start training is just to get started.
Stop saying, “Oh, I’ll just run one next year; it’s too late to start training this year!” That’s nonsense! It’s never too late to begin training.
If you’re really sedentary, you can start by incorporating a walking routine to build up your exercise capacity. Begin by walking 30 minutes a day and gradually increase that to 45 minutes at least five days a week, if not daily. It’s always good to get your blood pumping every day!
Transitioning from walking 45 minutes a day to completing a 5K is a different challenge, but it’s achievable!
One of the best ways to train for a 5K is to use the fitness app Couch to 5K (C25K). Many clients and friends have told me this app not only got them exercising again but also led them to a healthier life!
This fantastic (FREE) app takes you from a sedentary state with poor exercise capacity and guides you through the training to be 5K ready in just two months! Even if you’re not aiming to run a 5K, this app helps you get in shape. There’s even a paid extension to train for a 10K!
For those wanting to run longer distances and needing help planning their training regime, numerous online resources are available to help you achieve your goals.
You might want to try a color run for your first 5K, like I did. It’s relaxed, fun, includes small breaks at color stations, and offers a great overall experience!
A color run could be the perfect way to get your first 5K under your belt!
When it comes to training and staying active, keep it fun and engaging. Run a 5K, try new activities, and step out of your comfort zone. You might find you enjoy it!
