“Maintaining Wellness While Traveling”
We often get asked, “How can I stay active while traveling?” It’s a great question because a week of travel can really disrupt your workout or nutrition plan if you don’t plan ahead. Here are some expert tips to help you stay active on the road!
Road trips can be tough for those who lead active lifestyles. Sitting in a car for hours might not be your idea of fun, but there are plenty of ways to stay active!
Instead of just using your phone for entertainment, use it to help you stay fit. If you’re tired of games like Candy Crush, try downloading workout apps. Apps like GymSurfing can help you find nearby gyms and show you the prices for a one-day pass, saving you money. Or try Power20, which offers a 20-minute workout routine.
If you’re on a non-stop road trip, you can still exercise in the car. Bring small dumbbells and do bicep curls while sitting. Prop your elbow on your knee and slowly lift and lower the weight to strengthen your biceps. Don’t forget to stretch by rolling your shoulders or stretching your neck.
Make the most of your trip by researching activities along your route. Depending on where you’re driving, you can find trails, parks, lakes, and festivals to stay active. Anywhere in the U.S., you’ll find beautiful places to be active. For example, if you’re driving from the northeast to the southeast, find a beach to jog on. Use GPS to find parks to walk in, even in cities. On a coast-to-coast trip, make frequent stops at rest areas to walk the trails, or camp for a night and go for a bike ride or hike.
If you’re staying at hotels, fitness DVDs are great for a quick workout before exploring. Pop a DVD into your laptop for a 30-minute workout before hitting the road again. There are many options, from yoga and Pilates to Zumba and boxing. If your hotel has a gym, take advantage of it. If not, improvise with exercises like jumping jacks at rest stops, using stairs instead of elevators, and doing pushups and sit-ups each night, increasing the amount each time.
Challenge yourself to walk a few blocks instead of driving around a city you’re visiting. Staying active on road trips is challenging but possible. Be creative and don’t abandon your exercise routine just because you’re traveling!
